Sustainable Fashion, Textiles and Retail

Consumers’ interest towards recycling and sustainable solutions has increased. They appreciate the idea of recycling textile waste to produce new clothes; circular products should become “the new normal”. Consumers are asking for more visible and concrete information about circular clothing and how their behaviour has affected the environmental aspects of textile production.

When we learn about “sustainable fashion”, we soon realize that there are many forms of (more) sustainable fashion. Some actors and individuals emphasize the importance of making clothes in a more environmentally friendly manner, while others advocate secondhand/vintage or underline the benefits of swapping, renting or borrowing clothes as opposed to purchasing newly produced clothes.

We recognise that fast fashion has made it affordable for everyone to experience the pleasure of style, design and the latest trends. We were told however that the most sustainable garment is the one we already own and that repairing, rewearing, reusing, and renting are preferable to recycling or discarding clothes.

MVB Indonesia together with BINUS University will host a seminar with a theme “Sustainable Fashion, Textiles and Retail”, and brings together for the first time information about lifecycle sustainability impacts of fashion and textiles, practical alternatives, design concepts and retail innovation. It challenges existing ideas about the scope and potential of sustainability issues in fashion, textiles and retail industries, and sets out a more pluralistic, engaging and forward-looking picture, drawing on ideas of systems thinking, human needs, local products, slow fashion and participatory design, as well as knowledge of materials.

Seminar tickets available to purchase via BukaLapak or Tokopedia or directly to miranda at miranda@phoenix.co.id.
